About The Program

An injured knee is very unstable and does not allow load bearing (the feeling of ‘giving in’). It is like a house with sinking foundations, where before remediation works start, the engineers need to assess the load, apply appropriate props to make the structure safe while the remediation work is being performed.

Neurologically, we lose control to move our body as the main movement pathway has been distorted and the overcompensation start to kick in. Simply speaking, our body applies a detour. If not addressed appropriately, this non optimal detour can become a new permanent pathway leading to further knee complications or other joint injuries (hip, spine or shoulders).

Emotionally, fear and doubts often kick in. ACL injuries often happen while playing sport, doing the things we love. Suddenly, a part of our identity has been taken away from us and doubts appear. Most commonly asked question is

Our rehabilitation approach allows the body to maintain access to the highway keeping the quads active and build a ‘bridge’ over the injured area, This works like a band-aid protecting the joint, allowing the underneath area to heal.

Emotionally, it empowers you to regain confidence and control of your body again.

Compared to other methods, there is no downtime. Rehabilitation can start from day one so muscular atrophy is minimised. To date, 100% of our clients have returned to high impact sport (skiing, taekwondo) within less then 12months. As the program looks at the body holistically, our clients often develop more strength and stability then prior to injury.

Every case is different. Depending on the severity of the injury and your ability to activate, the full recovery can take between 6 to 12 months. MRI scan after initial 12 weeks should already indicate ACL healing.

Program Stages

The program starts with Initial Assessment. This is when we look at your existing overcompensation patterns, analyse movement biomechanics, assess the load on the knee joint and stability of anchor points.

We will ensure the appropriate muscles keeping the knee joint open can be activated and prescribe initial exercises to start the program.

Please note this is an exercise program which means YOU need to do the work – Daily commitment of 3 x 5mins as a minimum especially in the initial 12 weeks is required

The rehab program is divided into 3 stages

  1. Non-Loadbearing (2-12 weeks)
  2. Strength /Load bearing- Bilateral (approx 6 months)
  3. Unilateral, Pivoting, Plyometric (4-12 weeks) followed by Return To Sport Clearance

Periodic testing for outcome measures is performed at 1 month, 3 months, 9 months and 12 months post injury assessing range of motion, asymmetry, dynamometry, movement patterning changes, ligament strength and knee stability.
